Built in 1556 and carefully restored by the Marilungo family, the Church of Santa Maria is located about a kilometer from Campofilone’s castle walls, on a hill reached by a scenic road that climbs from the western side of the village. Nestled in a centuries-old pine forest, it offers a spectacular panorama that embraces the Adriatic and the Sibillini Mountains.
The structure is simple and harmonious, featuring a small rectangular plan with a wooden truss roof. Behind the apse, a spiral staircase leads to a room with a fireplace, probably used by the priests who came here from the abbey to celebrate mass.
Important artworks are preserved inside, including two canvases by master Filippo Ricci (1755), a wooden crucifix from the 12th century, and a 16th-century Venetian bell made by Domenico Maccarin.
