Just outside the village of Campofilone stands “La Castagna,” a unique square-plan walles structure with a turret, built in the 16th century as a hunting lodge and later converted into a palombara. Its unusual battlements, shaped like chestnuts, gave the building its current name.
Palombare were once widespread throughout the Marche region, used for pigeon hunting, and Campofilone preserves some splendid examples. In addition to “La Castagna,” which dates back to the Renaissance, two older buildings from the 15th century are worth mentioning: the Palombara Amabili and the Palombara Pignotti, both recently restored and now private residences.
