The Village And Its History

Nestled in the green rolling hills of the Marche region and overlooking the right bank of the Aso River, just 3 km from the Adriatic Sea, Campofilone is a village that combines picturesque scenery with a thousand years of history.

According to Julius Amadio, the name of the village derives from “Campus Fullonus”, a place linked to dyers or launderers of the Liburnian age (7th cent. BC). Archaeological finds attest to a Picenian presence as early as the 7th and 6th centuries B.C., while the Roman age left remarkable traces: a water reservoir, a section of the consular Via Adriatica and the recent discovery of a villa with baths, a necropolis, and storage facilities. Campofilone was indeed a strategic stop between the colonies of Cupra and Fermo.

The heart of the village developed around the Benedictine Abbey of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, , the religious and cultural center from which the medieval historic core grew. In the 13th century, Campofilone became a free commune, and from the 14th century it came under the jurisdiction of Fermo. The town’s coat of arms— a rampant lion holding a sword and a golden band, standing on three hills against a blue background — encloses the symbol of both civil and religious power.

Even today, the village preserves the charm of its medieval walls. The entrance, made scenic by an avenue lined with centuries-old pine trees, introduces a tepering historic center, characterized by a main street culminating in front of the Abbey and picturesque alleyways, some covered by barrel and cross vaults. These narrow lanes suddenly open onto unforgettable views: the cultivated hills, the snow-capped Sibillini Mountains, the blue Adriatic Sea.
